Mattress Recycling
We started recycling mattresses as almost a hobby, we’d come in after work two nights a week and disassemble mattresses by hand. When we started we had no idea what we were doing or where this would take us, we just knew that mattresses shouldn’t be in landfills.
Mattresses Recycled Annually
In the last year, we’ve grown to over 25,000 mattresses recycled and have capacity to expand even further.
How Does Mattress Recycling Work?
Mattress recycling works by breaking the mattress down into its individual components and giving each material a new purpose. As shown in the diagram, the fabric fibers from the outer layer can be reused in insulation and other textile applications. The foam padding inside the mattress is processed and turned into products like carpet underlayment or animal bedding. The steel springs are pulled out and recycled as metal scrap, often becoming new construction materials. Even the wooden frame can be shredded and used for compost, mulch, or as an alternative fuel source. By separating the mattress into these core materials, up to 80–90% of the entire product can be recovered instead of ending up in a landfill.
Our Process
At Recycle IT, we’ve developed a streamlined mattress recycling system designed to keep as many mattresses out of landfills as possible. We collect mattresses directly from landfill partners and use specialized equipment we engineered ourselves to break them down quickly and efficiently. Each unit is separated into its recyclable components—foam, fabric, metal springs, and wood—allowing us to recover the majority of the materials with minimal waste. We also work closely with multiple processing partners to ensure every part of the mattress is reused in the most responsible way.
And our commitment to sustainability doesn’t end there. Recycle IT also offers full-service electronics recycling, including secure data destruction for hard drives, SSDs, and other storage devices.
